Traffic Changes and New Construction Underway in Riverdale Area

Traffic Changes and New Construction Underway in Riverdale Area

New Medians & Traffic Signal

New medians are in place on Northdale Boulevard just north of Main Street in the Riverdale shopping area. A stoplight is also planned at the high-traffic intersection between Costco and Menards. Every day, an estimated 16,000 vehicles travel along Northdale Boulevard creating a hot spot for congestion. The new medians are designed to improve safety and traffic flow in the area, which was identified as a priority in 2018.

In fall 2020, crews installed a new island barrier in the median near the entrance to Costco, which will better direct traffic in and out of the parking lot and prevent cars leaving Costco from turning north. The center median on Northdale was also modified to increase the southbound left turn lane capacity, providing more space for vehicles waiting to turn onto Main Street. Still to come is a three-way traffic signal at the access road between McDonald’s and the recently-demolished Famous Dave’s. The plan also includes pedestrian ramps and crosswalks.

The new traffic signal on Northdale Boulevard is expected to be operational in the spring of 2021.

Famous Daves DemoNew Retail Building

The Famous Dave’s restaurant, which sat between Costco and Menards in the Riverdale shopping area, was demolished in October. A new multi-tenant building and bank will take its place on the corner of Main Street and Northdale Boulevard. The specific tenant mix has not yet been established. Plans for the project were approved back in January 2020. Construction on the new retail building began during the fall of 2020.
