The new and improved Riverwind Park in Coon Rapids is now award-winning! The Minnesota Recreation and Park Association selected the Riverwind Park renovation for an Award of Excellence.
Riverwind Park was completely rehabilitated in 2019. Funding for the project was possible thanks to the Park Bond referendum voters approved in 2013. Condemned tennis courts, an aging playground, cracked pavement and a 45-year-old pool house were replaced with permanent pickleball courts, basketball courts, new playground equipment, walking trails and a fully remodeled community building. The Park Bond provided $900,000 for the project. The City Council allocated another $243,448 from general funds after residents expressed a strong desire to renew Riverwind Park as a community gathering hub.
The complete renovation transformed the sad and dilapidated park into a modern, vibrant community space. Riverwind re-opened with great fanfare, hosting hundreds of people for neighborhood meetings, camps, art & fitness classes, private rentals and much more. The community building, now outfitted with air conditioning, currently hosts a variety of community events and family gatherings. The pickleball facility has also become an extremely popular amenity, with large groups of players attracted to the site daily to use the sport courts and updated playground equipment. The award-winning park renovation project has become a great asset for the City.
