Permits to Carry Handguns

Applicants for a Permit to Carry handguns must apply to the county sheriff of the county in which they reside. Coon Rapids residents should apply with the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office:

Permits to Purchase Handguns

Applicants must apply with the city in which they reside and provide a valid Minnesota Driver’s License or Minnesota Identification Card with their current address. Coon Rapids residents should apply at:

Applicants can drop off completed gun permit applications between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Requirements:

  • Application must be filled out completely. Incomplete applications will be denied.
  • Applicant must be a resident of the City of Coon Rapids
  • Applicant must be at least 21 years old to purchase a handgun or semiautomatic military-style assault weapons from a licensed dealer and under Federal law must be at least 21 years old to acquire handguns from licensed dealers.
  • Restrictions are listed on page 4 of the Minnesota Uniform Firearm Application/Receipt Permit to Purchase/Transfer Application.
  • Applicant is required to pick up their Permit to Purchase in person and provide either a valid Minnesota Driver’s license or Minnesota Identification Card with their current address. Permits are not mailed.

Q. Is there a fee?
A. There is no fee for a permit to purchase a handgun.

Q. How long does the process take?
A. The application process takes approximately 5 to 7 Days. State statute 624.7131 subdivision 5 ensures the permitee will be provided with a permit or notified of a denial of permit within a 7 day period. When the permit is ready, the applicant will be notified by telephone.

Q. Can you mail the permit to me?
A. The applicant must appear in person at the Coon Rapids Police Department to pick up and sign their permit to purchase a handgun. The applicant must provide either a valid Minnesota driver’s license or identification card with their current address.

Q. Do I have to obtain a permit to purchase in order to buy a long gun?
A. The permit to purchase is for handguns only.
